The Italian Society of Applied and Industrial Mathematics

Founded in 1989

The Italian Society of Applied and Industrial Mathematics, in Italian, Società italiana di matematica applicata e industriale (SIMAI), was founded by a deed dated 20 December 1988 although its date of foundation is usually given as 1989. It was set up in the Istituto per le Applicazioni del Calcolo "Mauro Picone" in the Italian National Research Council in Rome, which had been founded in 1923 with Volterra as a president. This Institute became the operational headquarters of the new Society and, in addition, provided logistical support for the activities of the Society.

The Society works to achieve an effective interaction between universities, research bodies and industries, in the various fields of applied mathematics, taking an interdisciplinary approach to address problems of specific industrial interest. Applications are broadly understood, including not only the technological sciences, but also the biological, economic and social sciences.

The Italian Society of Applied and Industrial Mathematics has the following aims:
a) to promote the development of Applied Mathematics and Industrial Mathematics and related disciplines;

b) to establish links with similar associations or national and foreign research groups interested in the development of Applied Mathematics and Industrial Mathematics;

c) to disseminate information concerning the field of Applied Mathematics and Industrial Mathematics. Collect and distribute information regarding events of interest to Members, such as congresses, training courses or schools, available positions. Also make available information on doctoral scholarships, postdoctoral or temporary positions, inform members of funding opportunities provided by both national and international announcements;

d) to promote the coordination of study and research programmes in the fields referred to in point a) by promoting contacts between university environments, public research bodies and industries.
The Society has two types of membership, either individual membership of corporate membership which is available to Universities, Organisations and Companies which are interested in the activities of the Society. The Society collaborates with Organisations and Companies in a number of ways. For example:
(i) Organising sessions dedicated to specific industrial problems in the National Congress of the Italian Society of Applied and Industrial Mathematics.

(ii) Preparing, together with the Italian Federation of Applied Mathematics (FIMA) (Federazione italiana di matematica applicata), of the journal Matematica & Impresa, which shows concrete examples of collaborations between academics and industry in the field of applied mathematics.

(iii) Giving stimulation and support to young researchers engaged in research with industrial spin-offs through special prizes and the organisation of meetings.

(iv) Organising thematic workshops on topics of specific industrial interest.
In addition to receiving the SIMAI Newsletter, the Corporate Members have the opportunity to influence the activities of SIMAI requesting support for the organisation of thematic workshops, proposing specific activity groups or proposing contributions to the Matematica & Impresa and the Communications in Applied and Industrial Mathematics journals.

The Italian Society of Applied and Industrial Mathematics is the largest applied mathematics society in Italy with a membership of around 400 active members who are mainly based in universities and research institutions. The Society is part of the Italian Federation of Applied Mathematics (FIMA) together with the Italian Association of Operations Research (AIRO) (Associazione italiana di ricerca operativa) and the Association for Mathematics Applied to Economic and Social Sciences (AMASES) (Associazione per la matematica applicata alle scienze economiche e sociali).

2006: VIII Congresso Nazionale della Società Italiana di Matematica Applicata e Industriale, Baia Samuele (Ragusa), 22-26 May.

2008: IX Congresso Nazionale della Società Italiana di Matematica Applicata e Industriale, Rome, 15-19 September.

2010: X Congresso Nazionale della Società Italiana di Matematica Applicata e Industriale, Università di Cagliari, Cagliari, 21-25 June. The conference was organized in cooperation with SEMA (the Spanish Society for Applied Mathematics) and hosted by the School of Architecture at the University of Cagliari, located in the fascinating historic quarter of Castello, in the lively centre of the town, while the Engineering Faculty hosted the Opening Session of the Conference. The eight plenary lectures covered a wide range of topics, varying from familiar areas of applied analysis, numerical modelling, scientific computing, and computational geophysics to new interdisciplinary subjects such as computational biology and medicine. They were complemented by a traditional feature of SIMAI congresses, the extensive program of mini-symposia that covered most of the many diverse areas and applications of applied mathematics. About 400 communications were delivered by more than 350 scientists from Italy, Spain and all over the world.

2012: XII Congresso Nazionale della Società Italiana di Matematica Applicata e Industriale, Politecnico di Torino, Turin, 25-28 June. The aim of the Congress was to provide a scientific forum for presenting and discussing the issues and the advances in applied mathematics and applications of mathematics to industry, technology, the environment, cultural heritage, biology and society. By bringing together researchers and professionals in applied analysis, mathematical modelling and scientific computing, the Congress represented a key occasion to promote and stimulate interdisciplinary research in applied mathematics and to foster interactions with industry.

2014: XIII Congresso Nazionale della Società Italiana di Matematica Applicata e Industriale, Hotel Villa Diodoro, Taormina, 7-10 July. The six plenary lectures covered a wide range of topics, including complex networks, continuum mechanics, image processing, kinetic models, and uncertainty quantification. They were complemented by an extensive program of several mini-symposia that covered most of the many different areas and applications of applied mathematics to industry, technology, the environment, cultural heritage, biology and society. Furthermore, a focus session and a round table on Mathematics and Industry provided an important opportunity for the discussion on a novel approach to industrial Research and Development.

2016: XIV Congresso Nazionale della Società Italiana di Matematica Applicata e Industriale, Politecnico di Milano, Milan, 13-16 September. The Congress brought together researchers and professionals from academia and industry who are active in the study of mathematical and numerical models as well as their application to industrial and, in general, to real life problems; to stimulate interdisciplinary research in applied mathematics, and to foster interactions of the scientific community with industry.

2018: XV Congresso Nazionale della Società Italiana di Matematica Applicata e Industriale, Chiostro Sapienza, Rome, 2-6 July.

The SEMA-SIMAI Book Series

In 2013 the Italian Society of Applied and Industrial Mathematics was joined by the Spanish Society of Applied Mathematics in a series of texts published by Springer. The following information about the 'SEMA-SIMAI Book Series' appears on the Springer page [3]:-
As of 2013, the SIMAI Springer Series opens to SEMA in order to publish a joint series aiming to publish advanced textbooks, research-level monographs and collected works that focus on applications of mathematics to social and industrial problems, including biology, medicine, engineering, environment and finance. Mathematical and numerical modelling is playing a crucial role in the solution of the complex and interrelated problems faced nowadays not only by researchers operating in the field of basic sciences, but also in more directly applied and industrial sectors. This series is meant to host selected contributions focusing on the relevance of mathematics in real life applications and to provide useful reference material to students, academic and industrial researchers at an international level. Interdisciplinary contributions, showing a fruitful collaboration of mathematicians with researchers of other fields to address complex applications, are welcomed in this series.
