French Statistical Society - Introduction
The purpose of this article is to briefly present the history of the Société Française de Statistique (French Statistical Society) and to discuss the history of the learned associations that have united to form it: the Société de Statistique de Paris (Statistical Society of Paris) and the Association pour la Statistique et ses Utilisations (Association for Statistics and its Uses).
1. The SFdS at the crossroads of two paths
Each year, the French Statistical Society (more commonly known as the SFdS) organises at the end of spring a congress which currently gathers more than five hundred participants coming from various horizons: experienced statisticians or beginners, academics or not, researchers or users, ... These times of meeting are often appreciated and constitute a way to see or review, to discover or deepen, to take stock or to launch new tracks. But among all those who rub shoulders for the duration of this congress, how many are there who know how this need between statisticians, mainly French-speaking, to find themselves has developed? How many know the history of this Society that welcomes these many participants? Very little, it seems to us! In any case not enough for our taste. This is why we believe that we must give all the others - those who do not know this history - some information on its origins because they underline various interesting aspects of French statistics, especially during the last thirty years. And if we do it today, it is also to pay tribute, in a certain way, to Marie-Jeanne Laurent-Duhamel, Honorary President of the Société Française de Statistique, who passed away during the summer 2003 and was one of the key figures in this particular story that we want to trace.
The French Statistical Society was founded in 1997 from the merger of two associations of statisticians: the 'Statistical Society of Paris' (SSP) and the 'Association for Statistics and its Uses' (ASU). We will first discuss the course of the SSP. We will do this briefly since its history has already given rise to various publications, notably by Damiani (1987, 1988 and 1989), Depoid (1961), Kang (1989) and Rosenfeld (1997). We will then consider the history of the ASU.
