Mathematicians Of The Day

22nd February

On this day in 1805, François Arago was picked to head the completion of the measurement of the Paris Meridian. He was a 19-year old student at the École Polytechnique and was nominated by Siméon-Denis Poisson to finish the work begun by Mechain and Delambre.

On this day in 2012 Google released a Hertz doodle.

Quotation of the day

From Frank Ramsey
Suppose a contradiction were to be found in the axioms of set theory. Do you seriously believe that a bridge would fall down?
Quoted in D MacHale, Comic Sections (Dublin 1993)
