Committee Meeting Minutes for 1964

Minutes of the meeting of the Committee of the British Mathematical Colloquium, held at Digby Hall, University of Leicester, at 9 p.m. on Thursday 2nd April 1964.
  1. Professor W N Everitt was elected Chairman.
  2. Dr H G Anderson was nominated as Secretary for 1965, and co-opted to the Committee.
  3. The minutes of the 1963 Committee meeting were read and approved.
  4. Dr Davies reported:-
    (a) The same publicity had been obtained from the American Mathematical Society (Notices) and the London Mathematical Society (Journal).
    (b) Time had been too short to arrange a book exhibition.
    (c) The Topology speakers had obtained expenses from other sources; they were guests of the Colloquium in the Residence at Leicester. Prof. Lighthill and Dr Wilkinson were given meals as guests, but were not resident.
    (d) The application to the British Council for a grant had been too late.
  5. Professor Goodstein reported that a grant of £50 (fifty pounds) from the Royal Society International Congress of Mathematicians (Edinburgh) Fund had been obtained, but was unlikely to be repeated.
  6. Professor Hayman confirmed the invitation from Imperial College for 29th March - 2nd April 1966 (Easter being 10th April). Professor Everitt agreed to intimate these dates to the Colloquium on the Friday morning, and to publicise them as widely as possible in the hope of avoiding clashes.

After discussion it was agreed to explore the possibility of holding the 1967 Colloquium at Swansea or York. The 1968 location was left for discussion at Dundee, with general support for Trinity College, Dublin, in either Spring or Summer.
  7. Speakers for Dundee were discussed. It was agreed to revert to separate mornings for Analysis and Functional Analysis; Algebra and Theory of Numbers; Geometry and Topology.
  8. The subscription was left at 10/- (Research students 5/-).
  9. There being no further business, the meeting closed at 10.15 pm.
